Tech guide for panelists

Welcome to the climate camp 3.1! Here you will find a overview of the technical implementation of the panel and some important tips to make sure everything goes well from a technical point of view.

On Saturday before the pabel we will do a detailed technical check with you to make sure everything goes well. If you have any questions before then, you can reach us at tech@klimacamp-leipzigerland.de.

We use open source software and data privacy is important to us.

Panel

The panel will take place in a jitsi video conference, which will then be streamed via streaming.media.ccc.de for viewers. Only you as panelists and the moderator are in the video conference room, everybody else will watch the event via livestream. Parallel to the livestream there will be a text chat, where the audience can ask questions, which can then be given to the moderator. A demo version to see what all of that will look like, can soon be found soon at the circus tent.
In addition to our mail address tech@klimacamp-leipzigerland.de you can also reach the Tech Support at 004934296919740 (german landline) during the camp weekend or just write in our #techsupport chat.

Browser or App

Unfortunately, video conferencing with Jitsi currently only works with Chromium based browsers. As soon as one participant joins the conference with another browser (like Firefox or Safari), the quality for everyone else will be much worse. Therefore please use either one of the browsers Chrome or Chromium or install the Desktop Jitsi-App by technischerpunkt.org. (To install the app, confirm any security warning and start the app. On a Mac, right-click the app to open it. Unfortunately, the security warning cannot be avoided because the developers do not want to pay Apple and Microsoft to sign their app.)

Good internet / Wifi

A good internet connection makes video conferencing a lot easier. Often the bad connection is due to the bad wifi signal in your house rather than the internet line itself. Therefore, it is best to connect directly to your router via a LAN cable. If this does not work, do not sit too far away from your wifi router. If you are online with a mobile data connection, find a place with a stable connection and make sure you have enough data volume.
For ideal conditions you need about 3 Mbps upload and 7 Mbps download speed to our servers in Germany. You can check if this works in advance with e.g. https://bandspeed.de/.

Computing Power

Video telephony demands a lot from your computer. It’s best to close all other programs except the browser and – depending on how fast your computer is – don’t have too many tabs open at once.

Headset

The microphone in your computer is usually of very poor quality. To improve the voice quality, it is therefore worth using a headset. It also avoids echo, the effect of everyone hearing each other twice if you are not muted.

Mute

In large groups, it is recommended to mute your own microphone when you are not speaking yourself, especially if there is some background noise. In smaller groups and if the sound quality allows it, it may be more comfortable not to turn off the microphone. In this case, the person speaking has less of a feeling of talking against a wall.
You can mute yourself by clicking on the small microphone icon at the bottom of the screen or by pressing the M button.
